Analysis of the role and application of biological fillers in recirculating aquaculture
1.The role of biological fillers
Biological fillers play a crucial role in circular aquaculture systems, providing habitats for microorganisms and helping to remove harmful substances such as ammonia nitrogen from water. Specifically:
Purification of water quality: A layer of biofilm is formed on the surface of biological fillers, which is composed of a large number of microorganisms. These microorganisms can take up pollutants in water, such as ammonia nitrogen and organic matter, and convert them into harmless substances, thereby achieving water purification.
Providing a stable microenvironment: Due to the small size of microorganisms, they are easily washed away by water currents or eliminated by disinfectants in water. Biological fillers provide them with a stable living environment, promoting the growth and reproduction of microorganisms.
2.Application of biological fillers
According to different materials and structures, biological fillers can be divided into two categories: fixed bed fillers and mobile bed fillers.
Fixed bed packing: This type of packing is fixed in the biochemical tank, commonly including ceramic rings, brush packing, etc. For example, the brush filler is made of PET Bowen wire or straight wire material, with a specific surface area of about 200m ²/m ³. Its advantage lies in the ability to cut large bubbles into small bubbles, increasing the dissolved oxygen content in the water.
Mobile bed packing: This type of packing operates irregularly in the biochemical tank, commonly including honeycomb shaped plastic packing and potato chip shaped plastic packing. They have a huge specific surface area, with commonly used plastic carriers having a specific surface area of up to 1000 square meters per cubic meter. They can significantly increase dissolved oxygen, and the thickness of the biofilm is controllable. Mature bacterial communities will naturally fall off under gravity and aeration.
